Filtration of degreasing and rinsing baths

A standard field of application of Atec filtration units are degreasing baths and rinsing baths and wash water in parts cleaning. Degreasing is of particular importance in surface technology because it prepares the parts for further manufacturing steps.

For many years now Atec applies diferent types of filtration units for the treatment of these baths / fluids. Objective of the filtration is the removal of fat, oil and metal particles. If degrasing is combined with slide grinding / vibratory finishing, the abrasion of the grinding media (plastic or ceramic) has to be removed by filtration as well.

Compound and surfactants should remain in the filtered water and return into the degreasing or cleaning bath. This recycling of the cleaning fluids allows to prolong the lifetime of the bath and to reduce operating costs. At the same time the quality of the bath stays constantly high. This improves process stability and guarantees continuous application and throughput times.

The success of lifetime enhancement of fluids depends on many different factors and thus is dificult to predict. Roughly estimated one can asume a 6 to 10 times prolonged lifetime compared with degreasing baths without treatment.

Atec filtration units can be used for the economically efficient treatment and recycling of very small immersion cleaning and rinsing baths (from approx. 500 l) as well as for spray cleaning systems which generally also have quite small cleaning fluid volumes. Also very large immersion cleaning systems with volumes of over 100 m³ can be treated by Atec filtration units.

For the cleaning of rinsing baths, microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes can be applied. MF is suitable if the target is to remove oil, particles and bacteria. In many cases, it is sufficient to remove this dirt, which is carried over to the rinsing fluid from the preceding degreasing bath. With the tighter UF process higher molecular compounds and surfactants can be removed. By means of nanofiltration even dissolved substances (multivalent ions) can be removed from the rinsing bath. Which kind of membrane filtration is to be applied, has to be decided individually from case to case.
